Mission San Antonio de Padua

Mission San Antonio de Padua was founded on July 14, 1771, the third mission founded in Alta California by Father Presidente Junipero Serra, and site of the first Christian marriage and first use of fired-tile roofing in Upper California.

Father Serra left Fathers Miguel Pieras and Buenaventura Sitjar behind to continue the building efforts, though the construction of the church proper did not actually begin until 1810. By that time, there were 178 Native Americans living at the Mission.^[2]

1771 - Father Junipero Serra founds the 3rd mission on July 14 in honor of Saint Anthony.
1773 - The mission is relocated to its present site.
1782 - Adobe Church is completed.
1813 - The present church is completed after three years of construction.
1834 - The mission is secularized.
1845 - The mission is put up for sale by the Governor of Alta California, but there are no buyers.
1907 - Restoration of the church completed.
1948 - The Hearst Foundation donates funds and extensive restoration is made of the buildings surrounding the church.
